MLB Updated Playoff Format and Seeding Rules

The MLB has recently updated their playoff format and will now feature a 12 team playoff.

This new format will include 12 teams, featuring the top 6 teams in each league. The top 3 seeds will be reserved for the division winners ranked on winning percentage. The final three seeds in each league are decided by the 3 wildcard teams, or the 3 teams in their respective league with the highest winning percentage that did not win their division.

Tiebreakers for MLB

With the updated playoff bracket, the MLB has also updated their tiebreaker system. There will no longer be a one game playoff for teams that have the same winning percentage. The tiebreakers moving forward will be as follows:

  1. The team with the better head-to-head winning percentage during the regular season.
  2. The team with the best overall record in intradivision games.
  3. The team with the best overall record in intraleague games.
  4. The team with the best record in the final 81 intraleague games of the season.
  5. The team with the best record in the final 82 intraleague games of the season (provided the game added is not between the tied teams), continue one game back until the tie is broken (Interleague games are skipped and ignored in this process.)
  6. Coin toss or drawing of lots will be used if all the above fail.
